Challenge yourself on the Kokoda Track
The Kokoda Track is one of Papua New Guinea?s most popular tourist attractions. This 96km trail links the southern and northern coast of Papua New Guinea and takes you on an unforgettable journey through breath-taking mountain terrain with spectacular views and unspoilt scenery.
Relive ancient history
The Kokoda Track has an important place in Australia?s history. On 21 July 1942, the Japanese landed near Gona on the north coast of Papua New Guinea. Over the next two months they fought the Australians and their Papuan Allies along the track ? advancing towards Port Moresby, where they planned to launch their invasion into Australia. But the Australians fought back against the Japanese, forcing them to retreat to their north coast strongholds at Buna, Gona and Sanananda. The battle had been won at a heavy cost ? 625 Australians lost their lives and over 1000 were wounded along the track. Not much has changed since then. Rusted weapons lie scattered along the track and there are no modern amenities ? making this trek as challenging as it was back in 1942. For many this is also an emotional journey as they follow in the footsteps of the Australian soldiers who fought so valiantly for their country and the brave Papua New Guineans who guided them.
